Confirmation Not Completion
Not only have we been considering advent amens about Jesus, Jesus Himself is “the Amen.”
He is so called in Revelation 3:14 bibrefrevelation3 bibrefrevelation3v14. “And to the angel of the church in Laodicea write, ’The words of the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of God’s creation.”
This is the seventh of seven letters. Jesus had been described already as:
- Him who holds the seven stars in His right hand, who walks among the seven golden lampstands (2:1)
- the first and the last, who died and came to life (2:8)
- Him who has the sharp two-edged sword (2:12)
- the Son of God, who has eyes like a flame of fire, and whose feet are like burnished bronze (2:18)
- Him who has the seven spirits of God and the seven stars (3:1)
- the holy one, the true one, who has the key of David (3:7)
And then again, “the Amen” (3:14).
It’s comparable to 2 Corinthians 1:20 bibref2corinthians1 bibref2corinthians1v20. “For all the promises of God find their Yes in Him. That is why it is through Him that we utter our Amen to God for His glory.”
Jesus is The Amen. Sometimes we hear that all God’s promises are fulfilled in Him, but it would be better to say that all God’s promises are guaranteed by Him. As the Amen He isn’t the “This-Is-the-End,” He is the “Let It Be So.” He is not the terminus, but the “Truly-Truly.” He is not the completion but the confirmation. As His first coming fulfilled round one of promises in flesh, so He will fulfill the remaining promises in fact. Amen! Come, Lord Jesus!
