Over Our Heads

Ezra wasn’t exaggerating when he said that their sins had gone over their heads, that their guilt had mounted up to the heavens (Ezra 9:6). They knew better. Even the opportunity for this kind of unfaithful sin was by grace; being back among foreigners required being back. The unfaithfulness looked worse against God’s favor.

Their guilt was overwhelming but not overstated. Our modern day prophets have no less case against the many compromised Christians.

But, while we offer no defense, we do appeal to our Deliverer. Church, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous!

Where sin increased, grace abounded much more. As high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is His steadfast love toward those who fear Him. We were dead, but God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love, made us alive together with Christ and raised us up with Christ so that He might show the immeasurable riches of His grace in kindness for generations.

None can stand before God in their guilt. But with Him there is forgiveness that He might be feared (Psalm 130:4). With Him there is forgiveness and fellowship. With Him there is cleansing and communion. With Him there is bread and wine, a feast of peace we share together in His presence.
