Not Unimunion

We are not Unitarians, and so we do not have unimunion. There are three Persons in one God, so there are many members in one Body.

We are saved as individuals, but we are saved not to be independent. A person believes, but there is not only a person who believes. With all our fellow believers we share communion.

You may remember from a few weeks ago, the root -munis refers to duties/obligations, so a community is a group with shared responsibilities. Similarly, communion is a shared meal, remembering and proclaiming the Lord’s death together.

The Lord’s Table is not a table for one.

Yes, each person should examine himself. And “anyone who eats and drinks without discerning the body eats and drinks judgment on himself” (1 Corinthians 11:29).

What does “discerning the body” mean? Some have argued that it means realizing that Jesus’ body is in the bread. But Paul isn’t giving a lesson in metaphysics or confronting them for too little sacramentalism. He’s confronting them for not having communion. In context, the “body” is the church, the brothers and one-anothers who share the Supper.

Unimunion isn’t just silly, it is unworthy.
