How Can We Lose?

Other than defeat the Greeks (ha), what could Xerxes not do? The ideas he had in one sleepless night led to honor for Mordecai immediately the next morning, no red tape stopping the execution of his plans. It’s the kind of power Solomon knew, and why wisdom knows that you want to be on the king’s good side (Proverbs 19:12).

How much more valuable to be on God’s good side? In God’s sovereign grace He predestined a people to be like His Son. In God’s sovereign love His Son and sin love Christ died to atone for the sins of the elect. In God’s sovereign power His Spirit brings dead people to life, He gifts us with faith that we might be justified. By God’s sovereign Word we’re certain of reaching resurrection glory.

“What shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who could be against us?” (Romans 8:31)

It’s an argument from greater to the lesser. Our opposition is of relative irrelevance compared to God’s favor.

There’s levels of “against” us. A lack of friends, an uncertain future, physical pains, big bills, an overbooked schedule. Also, leftist legislation, leftist billionaires funding leftist campaigns, Islamic armies, Chinese drones. Mocking, mistreatment, imprisonment (Hebrews 11:36-38). Also, the world, the flesh, and the devil. And, yet even if we are killed we can’t be separated from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord (Romans 8:35-39).

Beloved, if God is for us, how can we lose?
