Behold, the Days Are Coming

Don’t you love knowing that something is paid for even if you don’t have it in your possession yet? It’s one thing to have a thing but to know you have a big bill to pay; a bunch of people will be paying off Christmas in March. Yet even when the thing is not in hand, there’s a confidence of knowing it’s when not if.

In a greater way, Jesus has completely purchased the salvation of everyone who will ever believe in Him. Every sin has been atoned for, including the ones that we have yet to commit, plus the sins of those that will be committed by who will become Christians who haven’t even been born yet, and certainly including the generation in Israel that will repent when the New Covenant is fulfilled. “Behold, the days are coming,” and those will be great days.

But Jesus explained that the guarantee of the New Covenant was His own blood (Luke 22:20). He connected the Lord’s Table to the blood of the covenant, His blood. When we eat and drink we rejoicing that payment has been made and accepted, not that we’ve already received everything that’s been paid for.

For now, it can be hard.

And ye beneath life’s crushing load
Whose forms are bending low
Who toil along the climbing way
With painful steps and slow
Look now for glad and golden hours
Come swiftly on the wing
O rest beside the weary road
And hear the angels sing
(—“It Came Upon a Midnight Clear”)

Hear the lyrics of the angels: “Unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord!” (Luke 2:11)
