Poured Out as a Drink Offering

The apostle Paul uses a great word picture to summarize his life.

For I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my departure has come. (2 Timothy 4:6 ESV)

The “drink offering” was a liquid sacrifice, usually wine, poured out alongside other sacrifices such as the burnt offering and grain offering. It wasn’t a standalone sacrifice, it was poured over or beside the primary offering on the altar. The wine was completely consumed, poured out entirely with nothing held back.

Paul’s life, like wine on the altar, was being completely expended. He was being poured out to the last drop in sacrificial service to God. It’s followed immediately by the more well known analogies: “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.”

What makes the drink offering metaphor so powerful is its character of totality and willing surrender. Wine poured out on the altar cannot be recovered. Paul is saying his entire life, in his sufferings and laboring, is being given over completely to God as an act of worship. He wasn’t reluctant about the loss. He is not a victim; he is like a priest pouring out his own life as an offering.

Christ offered Himself as a sacrifice to save us. And unto what? He offered Himself so that we could offer ourselves. He sacrificed so that we could be sacrifices, “which is our spiritual worship” (Romans 12:1).We are saved to serve. We’re called to be poured out. Don’t let sin get in the way of your sacrifice.
