Church Leaders

Sometimes we hear men say that the role of “leader” isn’t in the Bible. That’s actually not true. It’s true that in some places in our modern business world we’ve gone overboard with leadership guru stuff, but abuse doesn’t negate use, right? Right.

There are multiple Greek words that are translated “lead” or “the one leading/leader” with reference to labor in the church, not just in government or households. And in the church the behavior is not limited to those recognized in the office of elder.

I’d like to focus for now on one example. According to Romans 12:8, leaders lead sake of building up the body. It’s near the end of the paragraph about one body with many members.

the one who exhorts, in his exhortation; the one who contributes, in generosity; the one who leads, with zeal; the one who does acts of mercy, with cheerfulness. (Romans 12:8 ESV)

“Leads” is a great translation, while this particular word (προΐστημι) has the nuance of standing before. It’s the out in front guy. And note that there’s nothing in this passage limiting it to pastors.

And, of all the things Paul could have qualified leading with here, you might think the leader should lead with patience, or love, even wisdom. Those are good virtues, even vital. But surprisingly he requires something else.

Leaders should be leading with zeal. Lead with spoude. And for those who aren’t the leaders, don’t throw buckets of cold water on the leader’s zeal, especially when he’s trying to do it for your benefit.
