Our Savior

Luke 2:11 is the first time Jesus is introduced as “Savior.” And actually, there is only one other time in all four Gospels when that title is applied to Jesus, in John 4:42. Even in Acts this is only used of Him twice.

But then the epistles really start to connect the dots concerning what Jesus has done. The apostles were in a better spot to flesh out what Mary was trying formulate.

The apostle John said, “We have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world” (1 John 4:14).

The apostle Peter exhorted that we are to “grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ” (1 Peter 3:18).

The apostle Paul acknowledged that we are “waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ” (Titus 2:13). And in another place also he said, “our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ” (Philippians 3:20).

Beloved, we are saved. We ponder our salvation and our Savior, still working to put together all the grace that is ours. We praise God for our salvation and His Son, our Savior, still seeking to put together all His eternal purposes and love. We eat bread together and drink wine because God saves sinners and puts us together. Glory to God in the highest, and here around this table we know His grace and peace in our Savior, Jesus, who is Christ the Lord.
