The Supper Doesn't Starve Faith
Communion is not just from faith, it is for faith. I’m borrowing prepositional phrases from Romans 1:17 bibrefromans1 bibrefromans1v17. The gospel reveals the righteousness of God “from faith for faith.” Faith is the way we receive life, faith is the way we live. “The righteous shall live by faith.”
Eating the bread and drinking the cup proclaims the Lord’s death until He comes (1 Corinthians 11:26 bibref1corinthians11 bibref1corinthians11v26). And it also increases our confidence to live for the Lord until He comes. Confidence is “with fide,” with faith. The Supper feeds us, it does not starve us.
Six years ago today when we resumed our precedented time around the Lord’s Table back inside, we rejoiced with great joy. By God’s grace, our faith was stronger. It had been tested, and one result of that test is that we won’t accept missing weeks around the Table again, whatever unprecedented times are ahead.
The Lord continues to test our faith as He sees as necessary. He is forging our faith. He purifies it so that it is genuine, and the tested genuineness of our faith will “result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ” (1 Peter 1:7 bibref1peter1 bibref1peter1v7).
So, church, in this rejoice. By faith we have a living hope. God is guarding us by faith. We will obtain the outcome of our faith, the salvation of our souls, because Jesus Christ is risen from the dead.
