No Time Like the Present
Rejoicing and weeping, singing and silence, Word and prayer, feasting and fasting, all are yours. When it comes to the Lord’s Table, we’ve considered that it is remembrance and anticipating, faith looks both directions. Jesus died and Jesus will return. Christians build on the battles of the past and we battle to build the future.
I realized, though, that communion is not a two-legged stool. In this world many things are binary, but not this Table. I don’t think we’ve missed it, and in one way we can’t. And also, let us meditate on what Jesus wants for us right now.
We can’t be in any other time. The Lord of history either controls every moment or none. He claims for Himself every square inch in the cosmos and every tick-tock of every clock. This does imply that if He wanted you or us to be in some other minute He’d have us then.
We sing and chew bread and sip wine and look around in the present. Be present. Communion is a sharing together, which is not asynchronous. Our praise is in sync. We share Christ, we share His meal, we share His grace as remembered in previous generations, we share the hope of His grace which will be revealed in the last days. And we share all of that right now.
It is not unspiritual to realize when we are, it is actually unspiritual to miss these givens, in truth and in time.
