Bread-sharers

We are one of Christ’s little companies. As I’ve been pointing out, the root of the word company is tasty. It’s derived from the compound of two words in Latin, com meaning “with” and panis meaning “bread.” A companion is one who you share bread with. A company is a plurality of bread-sharers.

Sin isolates. Grace reconciles. Sin distances. Salvation brings near. Sin hoards. In Christ we see how those who give receive even more.

Those who share communion (with-duties) can be called a company (with-bread).

It is not impossible, but it is actually more difficult, to maintain bitterness and envy when you eat face to face with someone. Even the worldly have recognized this, and it’s because the world works the way it does because of the one who created and governs the world.

God Himself shares Himself. He walked with Adam and Eve in the garden, He took on flesh and dwelt among men in Israel. He miraculously fed five thousand and still had leftovers, He supernaturally feeds all His people with one loaf.

The bread that we break, is it not a participation in the body of Christ? Because there is one bread, we who are many are one body, for we all partake of the one bread. (1 Corinthians 10:16–17 ESV)

Here we are, a little company, and we eat and drink in Jesus’ name.
