No. Wrong. Whatever.

God reveals His will. He does not leave us in the dark about what He wants; we are not figuring out the world by observing the pattern in a pile of chicken bones or interpreting the shape of a smoke before it vanishes.

We distinguish between His will of decree and His will of precept, because in His sovereignty He decrees the disobedience of some to His precepts for His glory in the end. But Christians ought to want to do His revealed will.

There are at least three ways to approach His revealed will the wrong way.

  1. As sinners
  2. As scoffers
  3. As sluggards

The first two I’ve taken from Psalm 1. Sinners hear God’s Word and say, No. “I won’t do what You want, and I will do what You don’t want.” This is the idea of transgression, crossing the line, climbing the fence, doing the opposite.

Scoffers hear God’s Word and say, Wrong. “This isn’t fair.” Or “Who gave you the right to make these demands?” They may or may not cross the line, but they complain about it. They think they are above the line. They don’t just fail to submit, they mock.

Sluggards hear God’s Word and say, Whatever. They know their assignment and they just won’t. The lazy are usually gifted, so to speak, with fantastic rationalization abilities, so they never saw a job that didn’t have an excuse to explain why they couldn’t.

“All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.” When you have heard God’s will, follow it, gladly, with zeal.
