Light Is Right

Let’s go back to Esther 8. It’s a rare description: they “had light and gladness and joy and honor” (Esther 8:16). In context, “light” contrasts not with darkness but with heaviness. A weight came off.

It’s like a beach ball under water, it wants to rise. There is a bounce, a buoyancy, a beaming.

The reason for the light feeling was the elevation of Mordecai and the news of the decree. But that’s interesting, right?

All they’ve gotten is new news. The only thing that’s changed is an announcement. No one has made it all the way safely through yet. It’ll be months before the outcome is final. But the news is good.

This is another angle on why it is RIGHT to celebrate communion with LIGHT. We have had the good news preached to us, a word that is an imperishable seed, that is living and abiding and remains forever (1 Peter 2:23-35). The Lamb has ransomed us, the Lamb stands as having been slain, the Lamb will return as a Lion on our behalf.

This is a table of relief and rejoicing. Pilgrim’s life was heavy when he carried his burden, not when it came off. Christ has born our sin and risen again, and we with Him. Our hearts are lifted up, we sing, we eat and drink with light and gladness and joy and honor.
