We Are All Hamans
Apart from grace we are all Hamans. As soon as we make a judgment of another we stand condemned (Romans 2:1 bibrefromans2 bibrefromans2v1). The mental gallows we build for others testify against us. In our flesh we are foes and enemies to the Lord. We deserve to be hanged high.
Which makes the gospel of Jesus Christ quite a message. Jesus said, “As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in Him may have eternal life” (John 3:14-15 bibrefjohn3 bibrefjohn3v14 bibrefjohn3v15).
Later the crowd knew that when Jesus said “lifted up” He meant that the Son of Man would die. They wondered how the Christ could remain forever and yet be lifted up (John 12:32-34 bibrefjohn12 bibrefjohn12v32 bibrefjohn12v33 bibrefjohn12v34). But He had to die for those who deserved to die. He was lifted up on the cross for all of us who deserved Haman’s gallows.
When Haman was lifted up, he knew scorn. When Jesus was lifted up, He also was scorned by some, but others He drew to Himself. He took the gallows we deserved. What a substitute. Hallelujah! What a Savior!
