Sons of Blessing
Abraham’s move from Ur to Canaan was not his most trying trip. Abraham’s wife being taken into the Pharaoh’s harem was not the greatest threat he faced. When God told him to sacrifice his son, his only son, Isaac, that was a test of faith.
We know the story. Abraham was ready to go through with it. He believed that God would give him back his son from the dead (Hebrews 11:19 bibrefhebrews11 bibrefhebrews11v19). So he readied his knife, and apparently Isaac was also ready, since he was likely at an age to overpower his dad, or at least run away, if he had wanted to. But God stopped Abraham’s hand, and God provided a ram for a sacrifice in Isaac’s place (Genesis 22:9-13 bibrefgenesis22 bibrefgenesis22v9 bibrefgenesis22v10 bibrefgenesis22v11 bibrefgenesis22v12 bibrefgenesis22v13).
“And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel beforehand to Abraham, saying, ‘In you shall all the nations be blessed’” (Galatians 3:8 bibrefgalatians3 bibrefgalatians3v8). We aren’t descendants of Abraham’s offspring through Isaac and Jacob, but we are grafted in to the blessings through our faith in Jesus. “If you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s offspring, heirs according to promise” (Galatians 3:29 bibrefgalatians3 bibrefgalatians3v29). God sacrificed a son of Abraham in our place so that we could be sons. In Jesus we are sons of blessing.
By God’s favor you have faith. By God’s favor this faith has brought you into fellowship with Him and all His people. By God’s favor we eat this bread and drink this cup and proclaim the Lord’s death “until He comes” again!
