Vessels of Blessing

It’s an obvious observation. We are made to eat, day by day, and we are also not made to remember every meal, let alone every food. But what we eat helps or hurts us. It adds up. What we consume, repeatedly over time, makes our bodies grow.

As the body of Christ, we may not remember every discussion/meditation around the Lord’s Table, even though we eat bread and drink wine week by week. But the Bible adds some descriptions that reveal what we’re eating and drinking, and how we are growing up.

We drink the cup, and it is “the cup of blessing” (1 Corinthians 10:16a). We drink the blessing of participation in the blood of Christ. We drink blessing, and so we grow up in blessing. We are becoming vessels of blessing.

We eat the bread and it is participation in the body of Christ (1 Corinthians 10:16b). We share in one bread, in one salvation, in one Lord. And we grow up in unity.

So this Supper turns us away from the immaturity of individuality as well as idolatry. We have blessing in Christ, we have each other in Christ.

Beloved, drink, and be blessed. Eat, and be joined with Christ and with each other.
