The Grace Is Real
Some discuss whether communion is mere symbol or if something more is happening.
What does Christ’s body and blood get us? It does not get us righteousness like some sort of oil that fills up our moral lamps. It gets us righteousness like we’re brought to be right with God. It’s less that we were empty needing to be filled, and more that we were at enmity needing a way to be in fellowship.
So the bread and wine aren’t just symbols our communion with God, when we eat and drink by faith we are communing with God.
It’s grace to be invited to the Table. It’s grace to partake. It’s grace to be together. It’s grace to know the Father, and Jesus Christ whom He sent. It’s grace upon grace, and it’s not symbolic.
The bread and wine don’t become something else by grace, but by grace we are becoming something else as we eat and drink. Our union and our fellowship aren’t mere representations, they are real.
