Gratitude Is a Vibe
There are some arguments for why we should have a certain vibe around the Lord’s Table, and our vibe around the Lord’s Table is its own argument.
Communion is for all those who believe in Christ and are part of His body. So communion is for those who are humbled, forgiven, in fellowship with God through Christ and together with each other, and alive to God in Christ. Communion is for those who know and delight in the fragrance of the knowledge of Christ. Communion is for those who smell, and who give off, the aroma of life to life.
Therefore, the aroma, the vibe, is one of thanks! Gratitude is a vibe, an alternative to entitlement or anxiety. If you are good at seeing God’s grace in your own life and in the life of others, some people might mistake that for you being blind. It’s actually being able to see, and smell, and sense, even better.
The aroma of doubt, the vibe of despair, only fits if Christ has not risen from the dead and so we are still in our sins or needing to pay for some of our sins. “But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead”! (1 Corinthians 15:20 bibref1corinthians15 bibref1corinthians15v20) Rejoice and be glad!
When we do come celebrating the good news of eternal life in Jesus Christ our Lord, when we rejoice with joy inexpressible and full of glory by faith, when we eat the bread participating in the body of Christ, and when we drink the cup of blessing, such an embodied joy is an argument, sustained by words but enfleshed and tasted.
