Stupid is a sliding scale. It is possible to be a little stupid, it is possible to be big stupid, with a capital S centered on your shirt.
A couple years ago I read The Basic Laws of Human Stupidity. The Golden Law is this: “a stupid person is a person who causes losses to another person or to a group of persons while himself deriving no gain and even possibly incurring losses.” This sounds like whole policies of present political parties.
Stupid is not even a selfishness that makes sense. Being a little stupid is causing some damage to others without any benefit, and being big stupid is causing significant damage to others and oneself.
Is it possible to have such stupidity in a church setting? Not only does Cipolla state as the Basic Law that “always and inevitably everyone underestimates the number of stupid individuals in circulation,” which seems like it would be no less applicable among church people, Scripture itself says that certain controversies and quarrels are “unprofitable and worthless” (Titus 3:9). Stupid, “ignorant controversies…breed quarrels” (2 Timothy 2:23). There is a kind of arguing about words “which does no good, but only ruins the hearers” (2 Timothy 2:14).
Sin makes us stupid. So, when you’re pretty sure that you need to fight, it is appropriate to ask what benefit will come, who will profit by it? “Do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is” (Ephesians 5:17).
