Some Divisions Aren't Dumb
The apostle Paul condemned dumb divisions in the church. He and Peter and Apollos all preached the same gospel of the crucified Christ, and the power is in the word of the cross. In Corinth not only did some want to associate with their favorite preacher over other groups (1 Corinthians 1:10-12 bibref1corinthians1 bibref1corinthians1v10 bibref1corinthians1v11 bibref1corinthians1v12), some wanted to have their own special meal over others during communion (1 Corinthians 11:17-22 bibref1corinthians11 bibref1corinthians11v17 bibref1corinthians11v18 bibref1corinthians11v19 bibref1corinthians11v20 bibref1corinthians11v21 bibref1corinthians11v22). All wrong.
That said, in order not to empty the cross of Christ of its power (1 Corinthians 1:17 bibref1corinthians1 bibref1corinthians1v17), and in order not to eat and drink communion in an unworthy manner, we’ve got to do it as Protestants.
We cannot say amen to salvation by anything other than salvation by grace through faith, with solas modifying both. The confession of Roman Catholicism, and even of Eastern Orthodoxy, is that our confession of faith alone is anathema. They teach that faith is not sufficient, and they say we and our confession are curse. We say requiring anything more than faith is a different gospel (Galatians 1:6 bibrefgalatians1 bibrefgalatians1v6). We protest.
This also means that all those who confess Christ Jesus as Lord are welcome at His table, and we should welcome one another. Christ is head of the church, Christ alone. We do not depend on a pope for access to the Father. Our mediator is Jesus alone (1 Timothy 2:5 bibref1timothy2 bibref1timothy2v5), not His mom.
