Hell Is a Real Horror
Hell is a real horror. Hell really exists, as does the devil and do demons.
I’m not sure exactly when I would say this started to become more clear in my mind. Maybe it was last year around the time of the national election. Then it became more top of mind a little more than a month ago, not just with the the shooting of Charlie Kirk but especially then with the responses of many who celebrated his death and said that he “got what he deserved.” And then even over the last few weeks, just trying to drive anywhere drive through my neighborhood and get to my house, seeing some of the things that people put in their front yards…all of those things have kind of brought back at least in my mind and I think probably in yours that hell is real.
These spiritual forces of evil are not playthings, they are our enemies. The apostle Paul exhorted Christians to “put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil” (Ephesians 6:11 bibrefephesians6 bibrefephesians6v11).
Those who do not confess Jesus is Lord are still dead in their trespasses and sins. They are “by nature children of wrath” along with “the rest of mankind” (Ephesians 2:3 bibrefephesians2 bibrefephesians2v3). They are in “the snare of the devil,” having been “captured by him to do his will” (2 Timothy 2:26 bibref2timothy2 bibref2timothy2v26).
Here is an overlap of Demonology and Harmartiology. So far, this is all basic Bible teaching.
It is also easy to overplay and underplay. These truths can consume our thinking and fears in the wrong way, they can also be ignored, and that’s no good way.
I bring it up because too much candy is the least of our culture’s concerns when it comes to the increasing public demonstrations of demons and death around Halloween. “It is not what goes into the mouth that defiles a person, but what comes out of the mouth” (Matthew 15:11 bibrefmatthew15 bibrefmatthew15v11). And what is coming out, more and more, is straight from the pit.
Christian, you are wrestling “against the cosmic powers over this present darkness” (Ephesians 6:12 bibrefephesians6 bibrefephesians6v12). Do not make peace with them. Look to Christ who broke their teeth, who triumphs over sin and death and hell, and who frees us from captivity to our spiritual debts.
