The best part of the good news is that Jesus died so that we don’t have to. Jesus said, “Everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die” (John 11:26). The next part is that Jesus died so what we would learn how to. “Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps” (1 Peter 2:21).
We don’t pay the penalty for our sin; “For our sake [God] made [Christ] to be sin who knew no sin” (2 Corinthians 5:21). Because of that we are free to be honest with each other and give ourselves for each other. Freely we received, freely we give.
Our time around the communion table is the best of burdens. We are trying to remember double-extents: How unworthy we are! How welcome we are! How great our sin! And where sin abounded, grace abounds much more! “In Him [we] also are being built together into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit” (Ephesians 2:22).
Let not the unbelievers have reason to taunt us for how we treat each other. Let us do good, especially to the household of God (Galatians 6:10). Eat and drink with your people, sing with them and smile at them. And live in light of that supernatural-and-embodied communion.
