Woe to the Lukewarm

The Sermon on the Mount was preached pre-cross. The categories Jesus provided and the call to follow Jesus still apply post-cross.

The blessed want blessing, but the right blessing, and the fullness of blessing at the right time. The cursed are content with what they’ve got now, what they got for themselves. Pitiable are those who never see that they are pitiable.

Jesus addressed this problem in the church in Laodicea. They considered themselves rich and wealthy and without need for anything. Jesus told them: “you do not know that you are wretched and pitiable and poor and blind and naked” (Revelation 3:17). And what was the presenting characteristic of this attitude? They were lukewarm.

Woe to the lukewarm. Blessings are for those who are hot or cold. Blessings abound to all who come to Jesus for gold refined by fire, for white garments, and for eye-salve to see again. Be zealous and eat and drink.
